[Senco-forum] TA Appraisals

Hello
What does your Head want to use appraisal for?  If you have no means of using it to advance careers, there has to be a reason for it.

We don't call it appraisal.  We call it performance management and we set it up to encourage TAs to look at what they want to improve.  I incorporate their training wishes into our INSET when I can.  We also deliberately made it as non-judgemental as possible.  We don't have a means of observing TAs in lessons so I ask teachers for their views and this is used to inform discussion.

I line manage the TA Team leader.  She line manages the four 'core team' members and they share the rest of the TA Team between them.  We use one hour and a half after school INSET session for performanc management meetings and the 'core team' use some of their paid non-contact time.  Some TAs also have meetings with heads of department when they mainly work in that department.

I do think there is a great deal of value in working with TAs to reflect on what they do, with a focus on how they move learning on.

I hope this helps.

Subject: [Senco-forum] TA Appraisals

Some advice please for a new SENCo!  We
have not done any appraisals for our TA's for the last 3 years.  I have
been asked by the Principal to make sure that these start happening again.
How do other SENCo's make this a worthwhile use of their time & what is
the latest  recommended format? We  have 15 TA's.  There is
currently no opportunity for our TA's to progress from level 1 to 2, let alone 3
or HLTA due to financial constraints.  I am at a loss to know how to
proceed with this!
